Any one of several species of fringilline birds of the genus Calcarius (or Plectrophanes ), and allied genera. The Lapland longspur (Calcarius Lapponicus ), the chestnut-colored longspur (Calcarius ornatus ), and other species, inhabit the United States. [1913 Webster]
