cnidaria, n. pl. [NL. See Cnida.].
A comprehensive group equivalent to the true Cœlenterata, i. e. , exclusive of the sponges. They are so named from presence of stinging cells (cnidae ) in the tissues. See Coelenterata. [1913 Webster]
