amia, n. [L., fr. Gr. a kind of tunny.].

A genus of fresh-water ganoid fishes, exclusively confined to North America; called bowfin in Lake Champlain, dogfish in Lake Erie, and mudfish in South Carolina, etc. See Bowfin. [1913 Webster]
