epiphysis, n. [NL., fr. Gr. 'epi`fysis, fr. 'epify`ein to grow upon; 'epi` upon + fy`ein to grow.].

The end, or other superficial part, of a bone, which ossifies separately from the central portion, or diaphysis. [1913 Webster]
