alose, n. [F., fr. L. alosa or alausa.].

The European shad (Alosa alosa formerly Clupea alosa); -- called also allice shad or allis shad. The name is sometimes applied to the American shad (Alosa sapidissima formerly Clupea sapidissima). See Shad. [1913 Webster]
