Several words are so rendered in the Authorized Version. (1.) Those which are indefinite. (a) Hok, Isa. 5:14, elsewhere "statute." (b) Mad, Job 11:9; Jer. 13:25, elsewhere "garment." (c) Middah, the word most frequently thus translated, Ex. 26:2, 8, etc. (d) Mesurah, Lev. 19:35; 1 Chr. 23:29. (e) Mishpat, Jer. 30:11, elsewhere "judgment." (f) Mithkoneth and token, Ezek. 45:11. (g) In New Testament metron, the usual Greek word thus rendered (Matt. 7:2; 23:32; Mark 4:24).

(2.) Those which are definite. (a) 'Eyphah, Deut. 25:14, 15, usually "ephah." (b) Ammah, Jer. 51:13, usually "cubit." (c) Kor, 1 Kings 4:22, elsewhere "cor;" Greek koros, Luke 16:7. (d) Seah, Gen. 18:6; 1 Sam. 25:18, a seah; Greek saton, Matt. 13:33; Luke 13:21. (e) Shalish, "a great measure," Isa. 40:12; literally a third, i.e., of an ephah. (f) In New Testament batos, Luke 16:6, the Hebrew "bath;" and choinix, Rev. 6:6, the choenix, equal in dry commodities to one-eighth of a modius.

MEASURE
The following modern equivalents of ancient measurements are based upon the latest researches, and are probably as nearly correct as is possible at this time:
Dry
1. Bushel, about a peck, Matt. 5:15; Mark 4:21; Luke 11:33.
2. Cab, or kab, about two quarts, 2 Kin. 6:25.
3. Cor, equal to one homer or ten ephahs, equal to about eleven and one-ninth bushels, 1 Kin. 4:22; 5:11; 2 Chr. 2:10; 27:5; Ezra 7:22.
4. Ephah, equal to three seah, and in liquid, to a bath, containing about a bushel and a half, Ex. 16:36; Lev. 5:11; 6:20; 19:36; Num. 5:15; 28:5; Judg. 6:19; Ruth 2:17; 1 Sam. 1:24; 17:17; Isa. 5:10; Ezek. 45:10, 11, 13, 24; 46:5, 7, 11, 14; Amos 8:5; Zech. 5:6-10.
5. Half-homer, about five and a half bushels, Hos. 3:2.
6. Homer, about eleven bushels, equal to a cor or ten ephahs, Lev. 27:16; Num. 11:32; Isa. 5:10; Ezek. 45:11-14; Hos. 3:2.
7. Omer, about one bushel, Ex. 16:16, 18, 22, 32, 33, 36.
8. Seah, about a peck and a half, Gen. 18:6; 1 Sam. 25:18; 1 Kin. 18:32; 2 Kin. 7:1, 16, 18.
9. Tenth deal, about a gallon, equal to one-tenth of an ephah, Ex. 29:40; Lev. 14:10, 21; 23:13, 17; 24:5; Num. 15:4, 6, 9; 28:9, 12, 13, 20, 21, 28, 29; 29:3, 4, 9, 10, 14, 15.
Liquid
1. Bath, about five gallons and a half, 1 Kin. 7:26, 38; 2 Chr. 2:10; 4:5; Ezra 7:22; Isa. 5:10; Ezek. 45:10, 11, 14; Luke 16:6.
2. Firkin, about ten gallons, John 2:6.
3. Hin, about a gallon, Ex. 29:40; 30:24; Lev. 19:36; 23:13; Num. 15:4-10; 28:5, 7, 14; Ezek. 4:11; 45:24; 46:5, 7, 11, 14.
4. Log, two-thirds of a pint, one-twelfth of a hin, Lev. 14:10, 12, 15, 21, 24.

8. Furlong, a Stadia Luke 24:13.
9. Mile, (one thousand walking paces) only in KJV Matt. 5:41.
Most versions convert ancient terms into a reference to the modern "mile."
10. Sabbath day's journey, two thousand paces, Acts 1:12.

MEASURE; MEASURES - mezh'-ur, Several different words in the Hebrew and Greek are rendered by "measure" in English Versions of the Bible. In Job 11:9 and Jer 13:25 it stands for madh, middah, and it is the usual rendering of the verb madhadh, "to measure," i.e. "stretch out," "extend," "spread." It is often used to render the words representing particular measures, such as ['ephah] (Dt 25:14,15; Prov 20:10; Mic 6:10); or kor (1 Ki 4:22; 5:11 (5:2 and 5:25 Hebrew text); 2 Ch 2:10 (Hebrew text 2:9) 27:5; Ezr 7:22); or seah (Gen 18:6; 1 Sam 25:18; 1 Ki 18:32; 2 Ki 7:1,16,18); or batos, "bath" (Lk 16:6). It also renders middah, "measure of length" (Ex 26:2); mesurah, a liquid measure (Lev 19:35; 1 Ch 23:29; Ezek 4:11,16); mishpaT, "judgment" (Jer 30:11; 46:28); ca'ce'ah, a word of uncertain meaning, perhaps derived from seah (Isa 27:8); shalish, "threefold, large measure" (Ps 80:5 (Hebrew text 80:6); Isa 40:12); tokhen, and mathkoneth, "weight" and that which is weighed, taken as measure (Ezek 45:11). In Isa 5:14 it stands for choq, "limit." In the New Testament, besides being the usual rendering of the verb metreo, and of the noun metron, it is used for choinix, a dry measure containing about a quart (Rev 6:6).
