  Thee, O Christ, the Father’s splendor, Life and virtue of the heart, In the presence of the angels Sing we now with tuneful art, Meetly in alternate chorus, Bearing our responsive part. Thus we praise with veneration All the armies of the sky; Chiefly him, the warrior primate, Of celestial chivalry, Michael, who in princely virtue Cast Abaddon from on high. By whose watchful care repelling— King of everlasting grace— Every ghostly adversary, All things evil, all things base, Grant us of Thine only goodness, In Thy paradise a place. Laud and honor to the Father, Laud and honor to the Son, Laud and honor to the Spirit, Ever Three, and ever One, Consubstantial, co-eternal, While unending ages run.

• [Rev 9:11] My Soul Is Sad And Much Dismayed

  My soul is sad and much dismayed; See, Lord, what legions of my foes, With fierce Apollyon at their head, My heav’nly pilgrimage oppose! See, from the over-burning lake How like a smoky cloud they rise! With horrid blasts my soul they shake, With storms of blasphemies and lies. Their fiery arrows reach the mark, My throbbing heart with anguish tear; Each lights upon a kindred spark, And finds abundant fuel there. I hate the thought that wrongs the Lord; O, I would drive it from my breast, With Thy own sharp two-edged sword, Far as the east is from the west! Come then, and chase the cruel host, Heal the deep wounds I have received! Nor let the pow’rs of darkness boast That I am foiled, and Thou art grieved!

• [Rev 9:11] Our Earth We Now Lament To See

  Our earth we now lament to see With floods of wickedness overflowed, With violence, wrong, and cruelty, The killing fields our constant abode, Where men like fiends each other tear, In all the hellish rage of war. As listed on Abaddon’s side, They mangle their own flesh, and slay: Tophet is moved, and opens wide Its mouth for its enormous prey; And myriads sink beneath the grave, And plunge into the flaming wave. O might the universal Friend This havoc of His creatures see! Bid our unnatural discord end; Declare us reconciled in Thee; Write kindness on our inward parts, And chase the murderer from our hearts! Who now against each other rise, The nations of the earth, constrain To follow after peace, and prize The blessings of Thy righteous reign, The joys of unity to prove, The paradise of perfect love!
