1 John 2
- [1Jo 2:1] Come, Let Us Lift Our Joyful Eyes
Come, let us lift our joyful eyes
Up to the courts above,
And smile to see our Father there
Upon a throne of love.Once ’twas a seat of dreadful wrath,
And shot devouring flame;
Our God appeared “consuming fire,”
And Vengeance was His Name.Rich were the drops of Jesus’ blood
That calmed His frowning face,
That sprinkled o’er the burning throne,
And turned the wrath to grace.Now we may bow before His feet,
And venture near the Lord;
No fiery cherub guards His seat,
Nor double-flaming sword.The peaceful gates of heav’nly bliss
Are opened by the Son;
High let us raise our notes of praise,
And reach th’almighty throne.To Thee ten thousand thanks we bring,
Great Advocate on high;
And glory to th’eternal King,
That lays His fury by.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:1] Dread Hath Come On Me, A
A dread hath come on me,
I know not where to flee,
My pow’rs can naught avail me;
My trembling limbs grow weak,
My lips refuse to speak,
My heart and senses fail me.For thinking on that sound
That once shall pierce the ground
And make its slumb’rers tremble,
“Arise! the Day of Doom
Is come at last—is come!
Before the Judge assemble!”Ah God! no tempest’s shock
That cleaves the solid rock
Could make my spirit shiver
As doth that awful tone;
Were my heart steel or stone
’Twould hear that voice and quiver.I eat, or wake, or sleep,
I talk, or smile, or weep,
Yet still that voice of thunder
Is sounding through my heart—
“Forget not what thou art,
The doom thou liest under!”For daily do I see
How many deaths there be,
How swiftly all things wither;
How sickness fills the grave,
Or fire, or sword, or wave
Is sweeping thousands thither.My turn will soon be here,
The end is drawing near,
I hear its warning plainly;
Death knocketh at my door
And tells me all is o’er,
And I would fly him vainly.Ah! who in this my strait
Will be mine Advocate?
Will all things leave me friendless?
My wealth and power are dust,
This Judge is ever just,
His righteous doom is endless.Lord Jesus Christ! ’tis Thou
Alone canst help me now,
But ’twas for this Thou camest,
To save us in this hour—
Then show Thy mercy’s power,
For they are safe Thou claimest.Speak Thou for me! Thou art
The refuge of my heart;
With gladness let me hear Thee;
Bid me to Thee ascend,
Where praise shall never end,
And love shall aye be near Thee.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:1] Everlasting Song, The
Come, O my soul, my ev’ry pow’r awaking,
Look unto Him Whose goodness crowns thy days;
While into song angelic choirs are breaking,
O let thy voice its thankful tribute bring.Refrain
Tell how alone the path of death He trod;
Tell how He lives, thine Advocate with God;
Lift up thy voice, while Heav’n’s triumphant throng,
Swell at His feet the everlasting song.Think, O my soul, now patiently He sought thee,
Far, far away upon the mountain steep;
Then in His arms how tenderly He brought thee,
Home to His fold, a weary, wand’ring sheep.Refrain
Sing, O my soul, and let thy pure devotion
Rise to His throne, thy Savior, Friend, and Guide;
Sing of His love that, like a mighty ocean,
Flows unto thee, and all the world beside.Refrain
Soon, O my soul, thine earthly house forsaking,
Soon shalt thou rise the better world to see;
Then will thy harp, a nobler strain awaking,
Praise Him Who died to purchase life for thee.Refrain

Jesus, my Advocate above,
My Friend before the throne of love,
If now for me prevails Thy prayer,
If now I find Thee pleading there,
If Thou the secret wish convey,
And sweetly prompt my heart to pray;
Hear, and my weak petitions join,
Almighty Advocate, to Thine.Fain would I know my utmost ill,
And groan my nature’s weight to feel,
To feel the clouds that round me roll,
The night that hangs upon my soul,
The darkness of my carnal mind,
My will perverse, my passions blind,
Scattered o’er all the earth abroad,
Immeasurably far from God.Jesus, my heart’s desire obtain!
My earnest suit present, and gain;
My fulness of corruption show,
The knowledge of myself bestow;
A deeper displacence at sin,
A sharper sense of hell within,
A stronger struggling to get free,
A keener appetite for Thee.O sovereign Love, to Thee I cry,
Give me Thyself, or else I die!
Save me from death, from hell set free,
Death, hell, are but the want of Thee.
Quickened by Thy imparted flame,
Saved, when possessed of Thee, I am;
My life, my only heaven Thou art,
O might I feel Thee in my heart!Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:1] O Thou, The Contrite Sinner’s Friend
O Thou, the contrite sinner’s Friend,
Who loving, lov’st them to the end,
On this alone my hopes depend,
That Thou wilt plead for me.When weary in the Christian race,
Far off appears my resting place,
And, fainting, I mistrust Thy grace,
Then, Savior, plead for me.When I have erred and gone astray,
Afar from Thine and wisdom’s way,
And see no glimmering, guiding ray,
Still, Savior, plead for me.When Satan, by my sins made bold,
Strives from Thy cross to loose my hold,
Then with Thy pitying arms infold,
And plead, O plead for me.And when my dying hour draws near,
Darkened with anguish, guilt, and fear,
Then to my fainting sight appear,
Pleading in Heav’n for me.When the full light of heavenly day
Reveals my sins in dread array,
Say Thou hast washed them all away;
O say, Thou plead’st for me!Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:1] When At Thy Footstool, Lord, I Bend
When at Thy footstool, Lord, I bend,
And plead with Thee for mercy there,
Think of the sinner’s dying Friend,
And for His sake receive my prayer.O think not of my shame and guilt,
My thousand stains of deepest dye;
Think of the blood which Jesus spilt,
And let that blood my pardon buy.Think, Lord, how I am still Thine own,
The trembling creature of Thy hand;
Think how my heart to sin is prone,
And what temptations round me stand.O think upon Thy holy Word,
And every plighted promise there;
How prayer should evermore be heard,
And how Thy glory is to spare.O think not of my doubts and fears,
My strivings with Thy grace divine;
Think upon Jesus’ woes and tears,
And let His merits stand for mine.Thine eyes, Thine ear, they are not dull;
Thine arm can never shortened be;
Behold me here; my heart is full;
Behold, and spare, and succor me.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:4] Who Keepeth Not God’s Word
Who keepeth not God’s Word, yet saith,
“I know the Lord,” is wrong;
In him is not that blessèd faith
Through which the truth is strong;
But he who hears and keeps the Word,
Is not of this world, but of God.The faith His Word hath caused to shine
Will kindle love in thee;
More wouldst thou know of things divine,
Deeper thy love must be;
True faith not only gives thee light,
But strength to love and do the right.Jesus hath washed away our sin,
And we are children now;
Who feels such hope as this within,
To evil cannot bow;
Rather with Christ all scorn endure,
So we be like our Maker pure!For he doth please the Father well
Who simply can obey;
In him the love of God doth dwell
Who steadfast keeps His way;
A daily active life of love,
Such fruits a living faith must prove.He is in God, and God in him,
Who still abides in love;
’Tis love that makes the cherubim
Obey and praise above;
For God is love, the loveless heart
Hath in His life and joy no part.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:8] The Morning Light Is Breaking
The morning light is breaking, the darkness disappears;
The sons of earth are waking, to penitential tears;
Each breeze that sweeps the ocean brings tidings from afar
Of nations in commotion, prepared for Zion’s war.Rich dews of grace come o’er us, in many a gentle shower,
And brighter scenes before us, are opening every hour;
Each cry to heaven going, abundant answers brings,
And heavenly winds are blowing, with peace upon their wings.See heathen nations bending before the God we love,
And thousand hearts ascending in gratitude above:
While sinners, now confessing, the Gospel call obey,
And seek the Savior’s blessing, a nation in a day.Blest river of salvation, pursue thy onward way;
Flow thou to every nation, nor in thy riches stay:
Stay not till all the lowly triumphant reach their home;
Stay not till all the holy proclaim, “The Lord is come.”source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:8] O Christ, Our True And Only Light
O Christ, our true and only Light,
Illumine those who sit in night;
Let those afar now hear Thy voice,
And in Thy fold with us rejoice.Fill with the radiance of Thy grace
The souls now lost in error’s maze,
And all, O Lord, whose secret minds,
Some dark delusion hurts and blinds.And all who else have strayed from Thee,
O gently seek; Thy healing be
To every wounded conscience given;
And let them also share Thy heaven.O make the deaf to hear Thy Word;
And teach the dumb to speak, dear Lord,
Who dare not yet the faith avow
Though secretly they hold it now.Shine on the darkened and the cold;
Recall the wanderers to Thy fold;
Unite those now who walk apart;
Confirm the weak and doubting heart.So they with us may evermore
Such grace with wondering thanks adore,
And endless praise to Thee be given
By all the Church in earth and Heaven.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:15] What Is The World To Me?
What is the world to me,
With all its vaunted pleasure
When Thou, and Thou alone,
Lord Jesus, art my Treasure!
Thou only, dearest Lord,
My soul’s Delight shalt be;
Thou art my Peace, my Rest—
What is the world to me?The world is like a cloud
And like a vapor fleeting,
A shadow that declines,
Swift to its end retreating.
My Jesus doth abide,
Though all things fade and flee;
My everlasting Rock—
What is the world to me?The world seeks to be praised
And honored by the mighty,
Yet never once reflects
That they are frail and flighty.
But what I truly prize
Above all things is He,
My Jesus, He alone—
What is the world to me?The world seeks after wealth
And all that Mammon offers,
Yet never is content
Though gold should fill it coffers.
I have a higher good,
Content with it I’ll be:
My Jesus is my Wealth—
What is the world to me?The world is sorely grieved
Whenever it is slighted
Or when its hollow fame
And honor have been blighted.
Christ, Thy reproach I bear
Long as it pleaseth Thee;
I’m honored by my Lord—
What is the world to me?The world with wanton pride
Exalts its sinful pleasures
And for them foolishly
Gives up the heavenly treasures.
Let others love the world
With all its vanity;
I love the Lord, my God—
What is the world to me?The world abideth not;
Lo, like a flash ’twill vanish;
With all it gorgeous pomp
Pale death it cannot banish;
Its riches pass away,
And all its joys must flee;
But Jesus doth abide—
What is the world to me?What is the world to me?
My Jesus is my Treasure,
My Life, my Health, my Wealth,
My Friend, my Love, my Pleasure,
My Joy, my Crown, my All,
My Bliss eternally.
Once more, then, I declare—
What is the world to me?Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:25] Going On
The fires of the sun shall be quenched at last,
And the steadfast stars be gone;
But souls of the ransomed shall live in strength,
And they still shall be going on.Refrain
Going on, going on,
They still shall be going on;
Forever and aye, through eternal day,
They still shall be going on.As souls that remember and feel and thrill,
We shall live when seas are dry;
As separate beings, to love and will,
We shall live, nevermore to die.Refrain
From glory to glory our path shall be,
And from grace to perfect grace;
Through all the wide years of eternity,
We shall look on our dear Lord’s face.Going on, going on,
We still shall be going on;
Forever and aye, through eternal day,
We still shall be going on.Play source: Cyberhymnal - [1Jo 2:25] Hallelujah, ’tis Done!
’Tis the promise of God, full salvation to give
Unto him who on Jesus, His Son, will believe.Refrain
Hallelujah, ’tis done! I believe on the Son;
I am saved by the blood of the crucified One;
Hallelujah, ’tis done! I believe on the Son;
I am saved by the blood of the crucified One.Though the pathway be lonely, and dangerous, too,
Surely Jesus is able to carry me through.Refrain
Many loved ones have I in yon heavenly throng,
They are safe now in glory, and this is their song:Refrain
Little children I see standing close by their King,
And He smiles as their song of salvation they sing:Refrain
There are prophets and kings in that throng I behold,
And they sing as they march through the streets of pure gold:Refrain
There’s a part in that chorus for you and for me,
And the theme of our praises forever will be:Refrain

God hath not promised skies always blue,
Flower strewn pathways all our lives through;
God hath not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.Refrain
But God hath promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing sympathy, undying love.God hath not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptation, trouble and woe;
He hath not told us we shall not bear
Many a burden, many a care.Refrain
God hath not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain rocky and steep,
Never a river turbid and deep.Refrain

When rising from the bed of death,
O’erwhelmed with guilt and fear,
I see my Maker face to face,
O how shall I appear?If yet, while pardon may be found,
And mercy may be sought,
My heart with inward horror shrinks,
And trembles at the thought;When Thou, O Lord, shalt stand disclosed
In majesty severe,
And sit in judgment on my soul,
O how shall I appear?But Thou hast told the troubled mind
Who does her sins lament,
The timely tribute of her tears
Shall endless woe prevent.Then see the sorrow of my heart,
Ere yet it be too late;
And hear my Savior’s dying groans,
To give those sorrows weight.For never shall my soul despair
Her pardon to procure,
Who knows Thine only Son has died
To make her pardon sure.source: Cyberhymnal
