John 4:33

So the disciples began to say ¹  to one another, “No one brought him anything ²  to eat, did they?” ³ 

Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"

So the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?"

"Who brought it to him?" the disciples asked each other.

The disciples were puzzled. "Who could have brought him food?"

So the disciples said one to another, Did anyone give him food?

So the disciples said to one another, "Surely no one has brought him something to eat?"

Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?"

So the disciples began to say ¹  to one another, “No one brought him anything ²  to eat, did they?” ³ 

¹ tn An ingressive imperfect conveys the idea that Jesus’ reply provoked the disciples’ response.

² tn The direct object of ἤνεγκεν (hnenken) in Greek is understood; “anything” is supplied in English.

³ tn Questions prefaced with μή (mh) in Greek anticipate a negative answer. This can sometimes be indicated by using a “tag” at the end in English (here it is “did they?”).
