You must not have sexual intercourse ¹  with the wife of your fellow citizen to become unclean with her.

Do you listen in on God’s secret council? ¹  Do you limit ²  wisdom to yourself?

the root ¹  your right hand planted, the shoot you made to grow! ² 

How long, O Lord, will this last? Will you remain hidden forever? ¹  Will your anger continue to burn like fire?

Do not honor yourself before the king, and do not stand in the place of great men;

But Paul called out loudly, ¹  “Do not harm yourself, ²  for we are all here!”

then, my child, do this in order to deliver yourself, ¹  because you have fallen into your neighbor’s power: ²  go, humble yourself, ³  and appeal firmly ⁴  to your neighbor.

Let them be for yourself ¹  alone, and not for strangers with you. ² 

“Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) ¹  said, ²  “what has happened that you are going to reveal ³  yourself to us and not to the world?”

But Esau said, “I have plenty, my brother. Keep what belongs to you.”

So the guardian said to Boaz, “You may acquire it,” and he removed his sandal. ¹ 

Look, we have investigated this, so it is true. Hear it, ¹  and apply it for your own ²  good.” ³ 

Your wickedness affects only ¹  a person like yourself, and your righteousness only other people. ² 

So bathe yourself, ¹  rub on some perfumed oil, ²  and get dressed up. ³  Then go down ⁴  to the threshing floor. But don’t let the man know you’re there until he finishes his meal. ⁵ 

God said to him, “Because you asked for the ability to make wise judicial decisions, and not for long life, or riches, or vengeance on your enemies, ¹ 

take them and purify ¹  yourself along with them and pay their expenses, ²  so that they may have their heads shaved. ³  Then ⁴  everyone will know there is nothing in what they have been told ⁵  about you, but that you yourself live in conformity with ⁶  the law. ⁷ 

‘You displayed a sensitive spirit ¹  and humbled yourself before God when you heard his words concerning this place and its residents. You humbled yourself before me, tore your clothes and wept before me, and I have heard you,’ says the Lord.

And you, Zion, city doomed to destruction, ¹  you accomplish nothing ²  by wearing a beautiful dress, ³  decking yourself out in jewels of gold, and putting on eye shadow! ⁴  You are making yourself beautiful for nothing. Your lovers spurn you. They want to kill you. ⁵ 

You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge ¹  against the children of your people, but you must love your neighbor as yourself. ²  I am the Lord.

So do not be excessively righteous or excessively ¹  wise; ²  otherwise ³  you might ⁴  be disappointed. ⁵
