Do not wear yourself out to become rich; be wise enough to restrain yourself. 1
Conduct yourselves 1 with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunities.
God said to Solomon, “Because you desire this, 1 and did not ask for riches, wealth, and honor, or for vengeance on your enemies, 2 and because you did not ask for long life, 3 but requested wisdom and discernment so you can make judicial decisions for my people over whom I have made you king,
“Now you, Ezra, in keeping with the wisdom of your God which you possess, 1 appoint judges 2 and court officials who can arbitrate cases on behalf of all the people who are in Trans-Euphrates who know the laws of your God. Those who do not know this law should be taught.
For to the one who pleases him, 1 God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy, but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing 2 wealth 3 – only to give 4 it 5 to the one who pleases God. This 6 task of the wicked 7 is futile – like chasing the wind!
Then Daniel spoke with prudent counsel 1 to Arioch, who was in charge of the king’s executioners and who had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon.
I thought deeply 1 about the effects of 2 indulging 3 myself 4 with wine (all the while 5 my mind was guiding me 6 with wisdom) 7 and the effects of 8 behaving foolishly, 9 so that
O God of my fathers, I acknowledge and glorify you, for you have bestowed wisdom and power on me. Now you have enabled me to understand what I 1 requested from you. For you have enabled me to understand the king’s dilemma.” 2
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. 1 Many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did he get these ideas? 2 And what is this wisdom that has been given to him? What are these miracles that are done through his hands?
For our reason for confidence 1 is this: the testimony of our conscience, that with pure motives 2 and sincerity which are from God 3 – not by human wisdom 4 but by the grace of God – we conducted ourselves in the world, and all the more 5 toward you.
Only may the Lord give you insight and understanding when he places you in charge of Israel, so you may obey 1 the law of the Lord your God.
For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel – and not with clever speech, so that the cross of Christ would not become useless. 1
