Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits 1 to become unclean by them. I am the Lord your God.
He must not defile himself as a husband among his people so as to profane himself. 1
He must not go where there is any dead person; 1 he must not defile himself even for his father and his mother.
He said to them: “Listen to me, you Levites! Now consecrate yourselves, so you can consecrate the temple of the Lord God of your ancestors! 1 Remove from the sanctuary what is ceremonially unclean!
The Israelites who were returning from the exile ate it, along with all those who had joined them 1 in separating themselves from the uncleanness of the nations of the land to seek the Lord God of Israel.
He said to them, “Are you so foolish? Don’t you understand that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him?
Because they are callous, they have given themselves over to indecency for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 1
For you can be confident of this one thing: 1 that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the Lord; they will not please him with their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will be like bread eaten while in mourning; all those who eat them will make themselves ritually unclean. For their bread will be only to satisfy their appetite; it will not come into the temple of the Lord.
“Therefore this is what the Lord says: ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets 1 and your sons and daughters will die violently. 2 Your land will be given to others 3 and you will die in a foreign 4 land. Israel will certainly be carried into exile 5 away from its land.’”
People of Jerusalem, 1 I have seen your adulterous worship, your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods. 2 I have seen your disgusting acts of worship 3 on the hills throughout the countryside. You are doomed to destruction! 4 How long will you continue to be unclean?’”
Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence. 1 (Now it was very early morning.) 2 They 3 did not go into the governor’s residence 4 so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.
I am afraid that 1 when I come again, my God may humiliate me before you, and I will grieve for 2 many of those who previously sinned and have not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and licentiousness that they have practiced.
