The ship’s captain approached him and said, “What are you doing asleep? ¹  Get up! Cry out ²  to your god! Perhaps your god ³  might take notice of us ⁴  so that we might not die!”

‘Think carefully about the past: ¹  from today, the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, ²  to the day work on the temple of the Lord was resumed, ³  think about it. ⁴ 

Immediately a rooster ¹  crowed a second time. Then ²  Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept. ³ 

But for now ¹  I have considered it necessary to send Epaphroditus to you. For he is my brother, ²  coworker and fellow soldier, and your messenger ³  and minister ⁴  to me in my need. ⁵ 

Don’t worry ¹  about your belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt will be yours.’”

So Moses thought, ¹  “I will turn aside to see ²  this amazing ³  sight. Why does the bush not burn up?” ⁴ 

Then the Lord relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

my anxiety intensified. ¹  As I thought about it, I became impatient. ²  Finally I spoke these words: ³ 

Then I said, “I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One ¹  might become inactive. ² 

If I say, “My foot is slipping,” your loyal love, O Lord, supports me.

Here then is what the Lord who rules over all says: ‘Think carefully about what you are doing. ¹ 

And which of you by worrying can add even one hour to his life? ¹ 

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past.”

But when Jesus discerned their innermost thoughts, ¹  he took a child, had him stand by ²  his side,

And which of you by worrying ¹  can add an hour to his life? ² 

You must also say, ‘In fact your servant Jacob is behind us.’” ¹  Jacob thought, ²  “I will first appease him ³  by sending a gift ahead of me. ⁴  After that I will meet him. ⁵  Perhaps he will accept me.” ⁶ 

Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until Shelah my son grows up.” For he thought, ¹  “I don’t want him to die like his brothers.” ²  So Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

For here he is! He ¹  formed the mountains and created the wind. He reveals ²  his plans ³  to men. He turns the dawn into darkness ⁴  and marches on the heights of the earth. The Lord, the God who commands armies, ⁵  is his name!”

Go back home, my daughters! For I am too old to get married again. ¹  Even if I thought that there was hope that I could get married tonight and conceive sons, ² 

I thought, ¹  ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me at Gilgal and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt obligated ²  to offer the burnt offering.”
