Then you will call out, and the Lord will respond; you will cry out, and he will reply, ‘Here I am.’ You must 1 remove the burdensome yoke from among you and stop pointing fingers and speaking sinfully.
The children of your oppressors will come bowing to you; all who treated you with disrespect will bow down at your feet. They will call you, ‘The City of the Lord, Zion of the Holy One of Israel.’ 1
Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; 1 instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. 2 Yes, 3 they will possess a double portion in their land and experience lasting joy.
Whoever pronounces a blessing in the earth 1 will do so in the name of the faithful God; 2 whoever makes an oath in the earth will do so in the name of the faithful God. 3 For past problems will be forgotten; I will no longer think about them. 4
For this is what the Lord says: “Look, I am ready to extend to her prosperity that will flow like a river, the riches of nations will flow into her like a stream that floods its banks. 1 You will nurse from her breast 2 and be carried at her side; you will play on her knees.

Your priests 1 did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ 2 Those responsible for teaching my law 3 did not really know me. 4 Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. 5 They all worshiped idols that could not help them. 6
“Do so because my people have committed a double wrong: they have rejected me, the fountain of life-giving water, 1 and they have dug cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns which cannot even hold water.”
“Go and shout this message to my people in the countries in the north. 1 Tell them, ‘Come back to me, wayward Israel,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not continue to look on you with displeasure. 2 For I am merciful,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not be angry with you forever.
The Lord answered, 1 “This will happen 2 because my people are foolish. They do not know me. They are like children who have no sense. 3 They have no understanding. They are skilled at doing evil. They do not know how to do good.”
They do not say to themselves, 1 “Let us revere the Lord our God. It is he who gives us the autumn rains and the spring rains at the proper time. It is he who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.” 2
Its soldiers are armed with bows and spears. They are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride forth on their horses. Lined up in formation like men going into battle to attack you, Daughter Zion.’” 1
The Lord says, “I have rejected them because 1 the people of Judah have done what I consider evil. 2 They have set up their disgusting idols in the temple 3 which I have claimed for my own 4 and have defiled it.
So, watch out!” 1 says the Lord. “The time will soon come when people will no longer call those places Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom. But they will call that valley 2 the Valley of Slaughter and they will bury so many people in Topheth they will run out of room. 3
The snorting of the enemy’s horses is already being heard in the city of Dan. The sound of the neighing of their stallions 1 causes the whole land to tremble with fear. They are coming to destroy the land and everything in it! They are coming to destroy 2 the cities and everyone who lives in them!”
