But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness; they did not follow my statutes and they rejected my regulations (the one who obeys them will live by them), and they utterly desecrated my Sabbaths. So I decided to pour out 1 my rage on them in the wilderness and destroy them. 2
“‘But the children 1 rebelled against me, did not follow my statutes, did not observe my regulations by carrying them out (the one who obeys 2 them will live by them), and desecrated my Sabbaths. I decided to pour out 3 my rage on them and fully vent my anger against them in the wilderness.
The high priest who succeeds him 1 from among his sons must do it. It is a perpetual statute; it must be offered up in smoke as a whole offering to the Lord.
Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone into the battle, “This is the ordinance of the law that the Lord commanded Moses:
He said, “If you will diligently obey 1 the Lord your God, and do what is right 2 in his sight, and pay attention 3 to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, then all 4 the diseases 5 that I brought on the Egyptians I will not bring on you, for I, the Lord, am your healer.” 6
Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth 1 today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the Lord your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.
I am taking the kingdom from him 1 because they have 2 abandoned me and worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte, the Moabite god Chemosh, and the Ammonite god Milcom. They have not followed my instructions 3 by doing what I approve and obeying my rules and regulations, like Solomon’s father David did. 4
You must obey 1 all I command you to do, follow my instructions, 2 do what I approve, 3 and keep my rules and commandments, like my servant David did. Then I will be with you and establish for you a lasting dynasty, as I did for David; 4 I will give you Israel.
You have sacrificed to other gods! You have sinned against the Lord! You have not obeyed the Lord! You have not followed his laws, his statutes, and his decrees! That is why this disaster that is evident to this day has happened to you.” 1
“Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Because you are more arrogant 1 than the nations around you, 2 you have not followed my statutes and have not carried out my regulations. You have not even 3 carried out the regulations of the nations around you!
You implement the regulations of Omri, and all the practices of Ahab’s dynasty; 1 you follow their policies. 2 Therefore I will make you an appalling sight, 3 the city’s 4 inhabitants will be taunted derisively, 5 and nations will mock all of you.” 6
But have my words and statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, not outlived your fathers? 1 Then they paid attention 2 and confessed, ‘The Lord who rules over all has indeed done what he said he would do to us, because of our sinful ways.’”
In the tent of meeting 1 outside the curtain that is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons are to arrange it from evening 2 to morning before the Lord. This is to be a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for generations to come. 3
These must be on Aaron and his sons when they enter 1 to the tent of meeting, or when they approach 2 the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they bear no iniquity and die. 3 It is to be a perpetual ordinance for him and for his descendants 4 after him. 5
and wrap the sashes around Aaron and his sons 1 and put headbands on them, and so the ministry of priesthood will belong to them by a perpetual ordinance. Thus you are to consecrate 2 Aaron and his sons.
You must not do as they do in the land of Egypt where you have been living, 1 and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan into which I am about to bring you; 2 you must not 3 walk in their statutes.
and if his father has no brothers, then you are to give his inheritance to his relative nearest to him from his family, and he will possess it. This will be for the Israelites a legal requirement, 1 as the Lord commanded Moses.’”
