So I will throw you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your ancestors have ever known. There you must worship other gods day and night, for I will show you no mercy.’”
So do not listen to your prophets or to those who claim to predict the future by divination, 1 by dreams, by consulting the dead, 2 or by practicing magic. They keep telling you, ‘You do not need to be 3 subject to the king of Babylon.’
“They will belong to me,” says the Lord who rules over all, “in the day when I prepare my own special property. 1 I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.
Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple 1 eat food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar receive a part of the offerings?
But those who have believing masters must not show them less respect 1 because they are brothers. Instead they are to serve all the more, because those who benefit from their service are believers and dearly loved. 2 Teach them and exhort them about these things. 3
The place where they serve is 1 a sketch 2 and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary, just as Moses was warned by God as he was about to complete the tabernacle. For he says, “See that you make everything according to the design 3 shown to you on the mountain.” 4
May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. You will be 1 lord 2 over your brothers, and the sons of your mother will bow down to you. 3 May those who curse you be cursed, and those who bless you be blessed.”
If you violate the covenantal laws of the Lord your God which he commanded you to keep, 1 and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods, 2 the Lord will be very angry with you and you will disappear 3 quickly from the good land which he gave to you.”
Now, don’t be stubborn 1 like your fathers! Submit 2 to the Lord and come to his sanctuary which he has permanently consecrated. Serve the Lord your God so that he might relent from his raging anger. 3
“Indeed, 1 long ago you threw off my authority and refused to be subject to me. 2 You said, ‘I will not serve you.’ 3 Instead, you gave yourself to other gods on every high hill and under every green tree, like a prostitute sprawls out before her lovers. 4
They will be spread out and exposed to the sun, the moon and the stars. 1 These are things they 2 adored and served, things to which they paid allegiance, 3 from which they sought guidance, and worshiped. The bones of these people 4 will never be regathered and reburied. They will be like manure used to fertilize the ground. 5
“‘As for you, O house of Israel, this is what the sovereign Lord says: Each of you go and serve your idols, 1 if you will not listen to me. 2 But my holy name will not be profaned 3 again by your sacrifices 4 and your idols.
But there are Jewish men whom you appointed over the administration of the province of Babylon – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego – and these men 1 have not shown proper respect to you, O king. They don’t serve your gods and they don’t pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”
But Martha was distracted 1 with all the preparations she had to make, 2 so 3 she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care 4 that my sister has left me to do all the work 5 alone? Tell 6 her to help me.”
and anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may minister as my priests; their anointing will make them a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.”
