A rebuke makes a greater impression on ¹  a discerning person than a hundred blows on a fool. ² 

The one who acquires wisdom ¹  loves himself; ²  the one who preserves understanding will prosper. ³ 

Do not speak in the ears of a fool, ¹  for he will despise the wisdom of your words. ² 

The sluggard is wiser in his own estimation ¹  than seven people who respond with good sense. ² 

She knows ¹  that her merchandise is good, and her lamp ²  does not go out in the night.

A wise person’s good sense protects him, ¹  but a fool’s lack of sense leaves him vulnerable. ² 

I heard, but I did not understand. So I said, “Sir, ¹  what will happen after these things?”

I am a debtor ¹  both to the Greeks and to the barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.

Does not nature ¹  itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace for him,

The naive inherit ¹  folly, but the shrewd ²  are crowned ³  with knowledge.

The man and his wife were both naked, ¹  but they were not ashamed. ² 

This advice made sense to Pharaoh and all his officials. ¹ 

It is not the aged ¹  who are wise, nor old men who understand what is right.

When I tried to make sense of this, it was troubling to me. ¹ 

ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell,

Your instructions are a doorway through which light shines. ¹  They give ²  insight to the untrained. ³ 

To discern ¹  the meaning of ²  a proverb and a parable, ³  the sayings of the wise ⁴  and their ⁵  riddles. ⁶ 

Discretion ¹  will protect you, ²  understanding will guard you,

A fool takes no pleasure ¹  in understanding but only in disclosing ²  what is on his mind. ³ 

The discerning person ¹  acquires knowledge, and the wise person ²  seeks ³  knowledge.
