and say ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Woe to those who sew bands 1 on all their wrists 2 and make headbands 3 for heads of every size to entrap people’s lives! 4 Will you entrap my people’s lives, yet preserve your own lives?
“‘Then I passed by you and watched you, noticing 1 that you had reached the age for love. 2 I spread my cloak 3 over you and covered your nakedness. I swore a solemn oath to you and entered into a marriage covenant with you, declares the sovereign Lord, and you became mine.
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake that I am about to act, O house of Israel, but for the sake of my holy reputation 1 which you profaned among the nations where you went.
“At that time Michael, the great prince who watches over your people, 1 will arise. 2 There will be a time of distress unlike any other from the nation’s beginning 3 up to that time. But at that time your own people, all those whose names are 4 found written in the book, will escape.
Her 1 leaders take bribes when they decide legal cases, 2 her priests proclaim rulings for profit, and her prophets read omens for pay. Yet they claim to trust 3 the Lord and say, “The Lord is among us. 4 Disaster will not overtake 5 us!”
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ 1 and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 2
