The elders of the Jews continued building and prospering, while at the same time 1 Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo continued prophesying. They built and brought it to completion by the command of the God of Israel and by the command of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
which you commanded us through your servants the prophets with these words: 1 ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land defiled by the impurities of the local residents! 2 With their abominations they have filled it from one end to the other with their filthiness.
In those days Hezekiah was stricken with a terminal illness. 1 The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz visited him and told him, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Give instructions to your household, for you are about to die; you will not get well.’”
Isaiah the prophet visited King Hezekiah and asked him, “What did these men say? Where do they come from?” Hezekiah replied, “They come from the distant land of Babylon.”
1 So I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least important to the most important of them, all of them are greedy for dishonest gain. Prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.
Then 1 tell them, ‘The Lord says, “I will soon fill all the people who live in this land with stupor. 2 I will also fill the kings from David’s dynasty, 3 the priests, the prophets, and the citizens of Jerusalem with stupor. 4
The Lord who rules over all 1 says to the people of Jerusalem: 2 “Do not listen to what those prophets are saying to you. They are filling you with false hopes. They are reporting visions of their own imaginations, not something the Lord has given them to say. 3
The Lord said to me, “Jeremiah, 1 when one of these people, or a prophet, or a priest asks you, ‘What burdensome message 2 do you have from the Lord?’ Tell them, ‘You are the burden, 3 and I will cast you away. 4 I, the Lord, affirm it! 5
Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the Lord had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some 1 of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted, “You deserve to die! 2
Then the priests and the prophets made their charges before the officials and all the people. They said, 1 “This man should be condemned to die 2 because he prophesied against this city. You have heard him do so 3 with your own ears.”
So do not listen to your prophets or to those who claim to predict the future by divination, 1 by dreams, by consulting the dead, 2 or by practicing magic. They keep telling you, ‘You do not need to be 3 subject to the king of Babylon.’
I also told them, 1 “If they are really prophets and the Lord is speaking to them, 2 let them pray earnestly to the Lord who rules over all. 3 Let them plead with him not to let the valuable articles that are still left in the Lord’s temple, in the royal palace, and in Jerusalem be taken away 4 to Babylon.
For they have not paid attention to what I said to them through my servants the prophets whom I sent to them over and over again,’ 1 says the Lord. 2 ‘And you exiles 3 have not paid any attention to them either,’ says the Lord. 4
“Your royal Majesty, those men have been very wicked in all that they have done to the prophet Jeremiah. They have thrown him into a cistern and he is sure to die of starvation there because there is no food left in the city. 1
They also led off all the men, women, children, and royal princesses 1 that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, had left with Gedaliah, 2 the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan. This included the prophet Jeremiah and Baruch son of Neriah.
The prophet Jeremiah spoke to Baruch son of Neriah while he was writing down in a scroll the words that Jeremiah spoke to him. 1 This happened in the fourth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah. 2
ט (Tet) Her city gates have fallen 1 to the ground; he smashed to bits 2 the bars that lock her gates. 3 Her king and princes were taken into exile; 4 there is no more guidance available. 5 As for her prophets, they no longer receive 6 a vision from the Lord.
