In the first year of the reign of 1 King Cyrus of Persia, in fulfillment of the promise he delivered through Jeremiah, 2 the Lord moved 3 King Cyrus of Persia to issue a written decree throughout his kingdom.
1 In the first 2 year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfill the Lord’s message 3 spoken through 4 Jeremiah, 5 the Lord stirred the mind 6 of King Cyrus of Persia. He disseminated 7 a proclamation 8 throughout his entire kingdom, announcing in a written edict 9 the following:
Then some people 1 said, “Come on! Let us consider how to deal with Jeremiah! 2 There will still be priests to instruct us, wise men to give us advice, and prophets to declare God’s word. 3 Come on! Let’s bring charges against him and get rid of him! 4 Then we will not need to pay attention to anything he says.”
“Then, Jeremiah, 1 make the following prophecy 2 against them: ‘Like a lion about to attack, 3 the Lord will roar from the heights of heaven; from his holy dwelling on high he will roar loudly. He will roar mightily against his land. 4 He will shout in triumph like those stomping juice from the grapes 5 against all those who live on the earth.
My hand will be against the prophets who see delusion and announce lying omens. They will not be included in the council 1 of my people, nor be written in the registry 2 of the house of Israel, nor enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the sovereign Lord.
So prophesy and say: ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Surely because they have made you desolate and crushed you from all directions, so that you have become the property of the rest of the nations, and have become the subject of gossip 1 and slander among the people,
Now in that very moment 1 this pronouncement about 2 Nebuchadnezzar came true. 3 He was driven from human society, he ate grass like oxen, and his body became damp with the dew of the sky, until his hair became long like an eagle’s feathers, and his nails like a bird’s claws. 4
I wish you all spoke in tongues, but even more that you would prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be strengthened.
They were shown 1 that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven – things angels long to catch a glimpse of.
Moreover, 1 we 2 possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. 3 You do well if you pay attention 4 to this 5 as you would 6 to a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star 7 rises in your hearts. 8
