So you must consecrate the fiftieth year, 1 and you must proclaim a release 2 in the land for all its inhabitants. That year will be your jubilee; 3 each one of you must return 4 to his property and each one of you must return to his clan.
“Go and shout this message to my people in the countries in the north. 1 Tell them, ‘Come back to me, wayward Israel,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not continue to look on you with displeasure. 2 For I am merciful,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not be angry with you forever.
Recently, however, you yourselves 1 showed a change of heart and did what is pleasing to me. You granted your fellow countrymen their freedom and you made a covenant to that effect in my presence in the house that I have claimed for my own. 2
All the people living in Jerusalem 1 and all the people who came into Jerusalem from the towns of Judah came to observe a fast before the Lord. The fast took place in the ninth month of the fifth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah. 2
When Josiah turned around, he saw the tombs there on the hill. So he ordered the bones from the tombs to be brought; 1 he burned them on the altar and defiled it. This fulfilled the Lord’s announcement made by the prophet while Jeroboam stood by the altar during a festival. King Josiah 2 turned and saw the grave of the prophet who had foretold this. 3
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed 1 me to proclaim good news 2 to the poor. 3 He has sent me 4 to proclaim release 5 to the captives and the regaining of sight 6 to the blind, to set free 7 those who are oppressed, 8
Don’t report it in Gath, don’t spread the news in the streets of Ashkelon, 1 or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will celebrate!
And let the king’s decision which he will enact be disseminated 1 throughout all his kingdom, vast though it is. 2 Then all the women will give honor to their husbands, from the most prominent to the lowly.”
How delightful it is to see approaching over the mountains 1 the feet of a messenger who announces peace, a messenger who brings good news, who announces deliverance, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!” 2
They are saying, 1 ‘Announce to the surrounding nations, 2 “The enemy is coming!” 3 Proclaim this message 4 to Jerusalem: “Those who besiege cities 5 are coming from a distant land. They are ready to raise the battle cry against 6 the towns in Judah.”’
Make this announcement in 1 the fortresses of Ashdod and in the fortresses in the land of Egypt. Say this: “Gather on the hills around Samaria! 2 Observe the many acts of violence 3 taking place within the city, 4 the oppressive deeds 5 occurring in it.” 6
When you approach a city to wage war against it, offer it terms of peace.
