May praise flow freely from my lips, for you teach me your statutes.
A spring does not pour out fresh water and bitter water from the same opening, does it?
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here that we might seek the Lord’s direction?” 1 One of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shapat is here; he used to be Elijah’s servant.” 2
When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, he gave this message to Shemaiah: 1 “They have humbled themselves, so I will not destroy them. I will deliver them soon. 2 My anger will not be unleashed against 3 Jerusalem through 4 Shishak.
“Go, seek an oracle from 1 the Lord for me and those who remain in Israel and Judah. Find out about 2 the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For the Lord’s fury has been ignited against us, 3 because our ancestors 4 have not obeyed the word of the Lord by doing all that this scroll instructs!” 5
He turns springs into streams; 1 they flow between the mountains.
I am as full of anger as you are, Lord, 1 I am tired of trying to hold it in.” The Lord answered, 2 “Vent it, then, 3 on the children who play in the street and on the young men who are gathered together. Husbands and wives are to be included, 4 as well as the old and those who are advanced in years.
Instead new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 1
The prayer of an oppressed man, as he grows faint and pours out his lament before the Lord. O Lord, hear my prayer! Pay attention to my cry for help! 2
Before he could reply I asked again, “What are these two extensions 1 of the olive trees, which are emptying out the golden oil through the two golden pipes?”
So I will assign him a portion with the multitudes, 1 he will divide the spoils of victory with the powerful, 2 because he willingly submitted 3 to death and was numbered with the rebels, when he lifted up the sin of many and intervened 4 on behalf of the rebels.”
This is what the sovereign Lord says: Because your lust 1 was poured out and your nakedness was uncovered in your prostitution with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your children you have given to them,
They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the Lord; they will not please him with their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will be like bread eaten while in mourning; all those who eat them will make themselves ritually unclean. For their bread will be only to satisfy their appetite; it will not come into the temple of the Lord.
O sky, rain down from above! Let the clouds send down showers 1 of deliverance! Let the earth absorb it 2 so salvation may grow, 3 and deliverance may sprout up 4 along with it. I, the Lord, create it. 5
So let their children die of starvation. Let them be cut down by the sword. 1 Let their wives lose their husbands and children. Let the older men die of disease 2 and the younger men die by the sword in battle.
Instead we will do everything we vowed we would do. 1 We will sacrifice and pour out drink offerings to the goddess called the Queen of Heaven 2 just as we and our ancestors, our kings, and our leaders previously did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and had no troubles. 3
