I will chase after them with war, 1 starvation, and disease. I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to them. I will make them examples of those who are cursed, objects of horror, hissing scorn, and ridicule among all the nations where I exile them.
“The Lord says, ‘Those who stay in this city will die in battle or of starvation or disease. 1 Those who leave the city and surrender to the Babylonians 2 will live. They will escape with their lives.’” 3
All the people who are determined to go and settle in Egypt will die from war, starvation, or disease. No one will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.’
They will fill your houses, the houses of your servants, and all the houses of Egypt, such as 1 neither 2 your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen since they have been 3 in the land until this day!’” Then Moses 4 turned and went out from Pharaoh.

But keep an eye on it. If it should go up by the way of its own border to Beth Shemesh, then he has brought this great calamity on us. But if that is not the case, then we will know that it was not his hand that struck us; rather, it just happened to us by accident.”
But suppose a nation or a kingdom will not be subject to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Suppose it will not submit to the yoke of servitude to 1 him. I, the Lord, affirm that 2 I will punish that nation. I will use the king of Babylon to punish it 3 with war, 4 starvation, and disease until I have destroyed it. 5
Even now siege ramps have been built up around the city 1 in order to capture it. War, 2 starvation, and disease are sure to make the city fall into the hands of the Babylonians 3 who are attacking it. 4 Lord, 5 you threatened that this would happen. Now you can see that it is already taking place. 6
So I, the Lord, say: “You have not really obeyed me and granted freedom to your neighbor and fellow countryman. 1 Therefore, I will grant you freedom, the freedom 2 to die in war, or by starvation or disease. I, the Lord, affirm it! 3 I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to you. 4
“This is what you must say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: As surely as I live, those living in the ruins will die 1 by the sword, those in the open field I will give to the wild beasts for food, and those who are in the strongholds and caves will die of disease.
Then 1 I, the Lord, promise that 2 I will hand over King Zedekiah of Judah, his officials, and any of the people who survive the war, starvation, and disease. I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and to their enemies who want to kill them. He will slaughter them with the sword. He will not show them any mercy, compassion, or pity.’
