But these people are looted and plundered; all of them are trapped in pits 1 and held captive 2 in prisons. They were carried away as loot with no one to rescue them; they were carried away as plunder, and no one says, “Bring that back!” 3
Gather together and come! Approach together, you refugees from the nations! Those who carry wooden idols know nothing, those who pray to a god that cannot deliver.
So I will choose severe punishment 1 for them; I will bring on them what they dread, because I called, and no one responded, I spoke and they did not listen. They did evil before me; 2 they chose to do what displeases me.”
Your priests 1 did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ 2 Those responsible for teaching my law 3 did not really know me. 4 Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. 5 They all worshiped idols that could not help them. 6
Hear this, you peoples of the earth: 1 ‘Take note! 2 I am about to bring disaster on these people. It will come as punishment for their scheming. 3 For they have paid no attention to what I have said, 4 and they have rejected my law.
The Lord says, 1 “These people are like soldiers who have readied their bows. Their tongues are always ready to shoot out lies. 2 They have become powerful in the land, but they have not done so by honest means. 3 Indeed, they do one evil thing after another 4 and do not pay attention to me. 5
But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me! Each one of them followed the stubborn inclinations of his own wicked heart. So I brought on them all the punishments threatened in the covenant because they did not carry out its terms as I commanded them to do.’” 1
Then tell them that the Lord says, 1 ‘It is because your ancestors 2 rejected me and paid allegiance to 3 other gods. They have served them and worshiped them. But they have rejected me and not obeyed my law. 4
But when I speak with you, I will loosen your tongue 1 and you must say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says.’ Those who listen will listen, but the indifferent will refuse, 2 for they are a rebellious house.
Then she defied my regulations and my statutes, becoming more wicked than the nations 1 and the countries around her. 2 Indeed, they 3 have rejected my regulations, and they do not follow my statutes.
The Lord said to me, “What do you see, Amos?” I said, “Tin.” The sovereign One then said, “Look, I am about to place tin among my people Israel. I will no longer overlook their sin. 1
“Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, ‘The Lord who rules over all says, “Turn now from your evil wickedness,”’ but they would by no means obey me,” says the Lord.
“Therefore, I have caused you to be ignored and belittled before all people to the extent to which you are not following after me and are showing partiality in your 1 instruction.”
But the one who did not know his master’s will 1 and did things worthy of punishment 2 will receive a light beating. 3 From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, 4 and from the one who has been entrusted with much, 5 even more will be asked. 6
