and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is near the desert. 1
So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites on the Hill of the Foreskins. 1
Joshua defeated the whole land, including the hill country, the Negev, the lowlands, 1 the slopes, and all their kings. He left no survivors. He annihilated everything that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel had commanded.
The descendants of Joseph said, “The whole hill country 1 is inadequate for us, and the Canaanites living down in the valley in Beth Shean and its surrounding towns and in the Valley of Jezreel have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels.” 2
The king 1 sent a captain and his fifty soldiers 2 to retrieve Elijah. 3 The captain 4 went up to him, while he was sitting on the top of a hill. 5 He told him, “Prophet, 6 the king says, ‘Come down!’”
One thousand will scurry at the battle cry of one enemy soldier; 1 at the battle cry of five enemy soldiers you will all run away, 2 until the remaining few are as isolated 3 as a flagpole on a mountaintop or a signal flag on a hill.”
But for now I, the Lord, say: 1 “I will send many enemies who will catch these people like fishermen. After that I will send others who will hunt them out like hunters from all the mountains, all the hills, and the crevices in the rocks. 2
“My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds 1 have allow them to go astray. They have wandered around in the mountains. They have roamed from one mountain and hill to another. 2 They have forgotten their resting place.
They sacrifice on the mountaintops, and burn offerings on the hills; they sacrifice 1 under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is so pleasant. As a result, your daughters have become cult prostitutes, and your daughters-in-law commit adultery!
“Be sure of this, 1 the time is 2 coming,” says the Lord, “when the plowman will catch up to the reaper 3 and the one who stomps the grapes 4 will overtake 5 the planter. 6 Juice will run down the slopes, 7 it will flow down all the hillsides. 8
Let me please cross over to see the good land on the other side of the Jordan River – this good hill country and the Lebanon!” 1
Then we left Horeb and passed through all that immense, forbidding wilderness that you saw on the way to the Amorite hill country as the Lord our God had commanded us to do, finally arriving at Kadesh Barnea.
Joshua replied to them, “Since you have so many people, 1 go up into the forest and clear out a place to live in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites, for the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you.”
The whole hill country 1 will be yours; though it is a forest, you can clear it and it will be entirely yours. 2 You can conquer the Canaanites, though they have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels and are strong.”
I, the Lord, say that shepherds will once again count their sheep as they pass into the fold. 1 They will do this in all the towns in the southern hill country, the western foothills, the southern hill country, the territory of Benjamin, the villages surrounding Jerusalem, and the towns of Judah.’ 2
