all will be put to shame 1 because of a nation that cannot help them, who cannot give them aid or help, but only shame and disgrace.”
For whenever I prophesy, 1 I must cry out, 2 “Violence and destruction are coming!” 3 This message from the Lord 4 has made me an object of continual insults and derision.
I will bring such disaster on them that all the kingdoms of the earth will be horrified. I will make them an object of reproach, a proverbial example of disaster. I will make them an object of ridicule, an example to be used in curses. 1 That is how they will be remembered wherever I banish them. 2
For I solemnly swear,” 1 says the Lord, “that Bozrah 2 will become a pile of ruins. It will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example to be used in curses. 3 All the towns around it will lie in ruins forever.”
I answered, 1 “Who would listen if I spoke to them and warned them? 2 Their ears are so closed 3 that they cannot hear! Indeed, 4 what the Lord says is offensive to them. They do not like it at all. 5
O Lord, according to all your justice, 1 please turn your raging anger 2 away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. For due to our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people are mocked by all our neighbors.
Let the priests, those who serve the Lord, weep from the vestibule all the way back to the altar. 1 Let them say, “Have pity, O Lord, on your people; please do not turn over your inheritance to be mocked, to become a proverb 2 among the nations. Why should it be said 3 among the peoples, “Where is their God?”
