“Why did I not 2 die 3 at birth, 4 and why did I not expire as 5 I came out of the womb?
I should have been as though I had never existed; 1 I should have been carried right from the womb to the grave!
From whose womb does the ice emerge, and the frost from the sky, 1 who gives birth to it,
I have been dependent on you since birth; 1 from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God. 2
The wicked turn aside from birth; 1 liars go astray as soon as they are born. 2
Yes, you are the one who brought me out 1 from the womb and made me feel secure on my mother’s breasts.
I have leaned on you since birth; 1 you pulled me 2 from my mother’s womb. I praise you continually. 3
He said, “Naked 1 I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there. 2 The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. 3 May the name of the Lord 4 be blessed!”
Just as he came forth from his mother's womb, naked will he return as he came, and he will take nothing in his hand that he may carry away from his toil.
This is what the Lord, the one who made you, says – the one who formed you in the womb and helps you: “Don’t be afraid, my servant Jacob, Jeshurun, 1 whom I have chosen!
This is what the Lord, your protector, 1 says, the one who formed you in the womb: “I am the Lord, who made everything, who alone stretched out the sky, who fashioned the earth all by myself, 2
Listen to me, you coastlands! 1 Pay attention, you people who live far away! The Lord summoned me from birth; 2 he commissioned me when my mother brought me into the world. 3
and said, “I 1 called out to the Lord from my distress, and he answered me; 2 from the belly of Sheol 3 I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. 4
Finally he told her his secret. 1 He said to her, “My hair has never been cut, 2 for I have been dedicated to God 3 from the time I was conceived. 4 If my head 5 were shaved, my strength would leave me; I would become weak, and be just like all other men.”
You did not hear, you do not know, you were not told beforehand. 1 For I know that you are very deceitful; 2 you were labeled 3 a rebel from birth.
So now the Lord says, the one who formed me from birth 1 to be his servant – he did this 2 to restore Jacob to himself, so that Israel might be gathered to him; and I will be honored 3 in the Lord’s sight, for my God is my source of strength 4 –
