The words he speaks are sinful and deceitful; he does not care about doing what is wise and right. 1
But there is little hope for you ever doing good, you who are so accustomed to doing evil. Can an Ethiopian 1 change the color of his skin? Can a leopard remove its spots? 2
But if that nation does what displeases me and does not obey me, then I will cancel the good I promised to do to it.
They are determined to be experts at doing evil; 1 government officials and judges take bribes, 2 prominent men make demands, and they all do what is necessary to satisfy them. 3
so, to the contrary, I have planned in these days to do good to Jerusalem and Judah – do not fear!
or when a person swears an oath, speaking thoughtlessly 1 with his lips, whether to do evil or to do good, with regard to anything which the individual might speak thoughtlessly in an oath, even if he did not realize it, but he himself has later come to know it and is guilty with regard to one of these oaths 2 –
This is what will happen: Just as the Lord delighted to do good for you and make you numerous, he 1 will take delight in destroying and decimating you. You will be uprooted from the land you are about to possess.
