When someone comes to visit, 1 he pretends to be friendly; 2 he thinks of ways to defame me, 3 and when he leaves he slanders me. 4
It is vain for you to rise early, come home late, and work so hard for your food. 1 Yes, 2 he can provide for those whom he loves even when they sleep. 3
Remove falsehood and lies 1 far from me; do not give me poverty or riches, feed me with my allotted portion 2 of bread, 3
Do not bring any more meaningless 1 offerings; I consider your incense detestable! 2 You observe new moon festivals, Sabbaths, and convocations, but I cannot tolerate sin-stained celebrations! 3
His battle cry overwhelms like a flooding river 1 that reaches one’s neck. He shakes the nations in a sieve that isolates the chaff; 2 he puts a bit into the mouth of the nations and leads them to destruction. 3
No one is concerned about justice; 1 no one sets forth his case truthfully. They depend on false words 2 and tell lies; they conceive of oppression 3 and give birth to sin.
They see delusion and their omens are a lie. 1 They say, “the Lord declares,” though the Lord has not sent them; 2 yet they expect their word to be confirmed. 3
Have you not seen a false vision and announced a lying omen when you say, “the Lord declares,” although I myself never spoke?
“‘Therefore, this is what the sovereign Lord says: Because you have spoken false words and forecast delusion, look, 1 I am against you, 2 declares the sovereign Lord.
Therefore you will no longer see false visions and practice divination. I will rescue my people from your power, and you 1 will know that I am the Lord.’”
But those in Jerusalem 1 will view it as a false omen. They have sworn solemn oaths, 2 but the king of Babylon 3 will accuse them of violations 4 in order to seize them. 5
Her prophets coat their messages with whitewash. 1 They see false visions and announce lying omens for them, saying, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says,’ when the Lord has not spoken.
Is there idolatry 1 in Gilead? 2 Certainly its inhabitants 3 will come to nothing! 4 Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal? Surely their altars will be like stones heaped up on a plowed field!
You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped 1 by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord who rules over all? 2
My hand will be against the prophets who see delusion and announce lying omens. They will not be included in the council 1 of my people, nor be written in the registry 2 of the house of Israel, nor enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the sovereign Lord.
while seeing false visions for you and reading lying omens for you 1 – to place that sword 2 on the necks of the profane wicked, 3 whose day has come, the time of final punishment.
