After instructing the crowd to sit down on the ground,
So they reclined in groups of hundreds and fifties.
Now 1 when the hour came, Jesus 2 took his place at the table 3 and the apostles joined 4 him.
Jesus said, “Have 1 the people sit down.” (Now there was a lot of grass in that place.) 2 So the men 3 sat down, about five thousand in number.
As he spoke, 1 a Pharisee 2 invited Jesus 3 to have a meal with him, so he went in and took his place at the table. 4
Then the disciple whom Jesus loved 1 leaned back against Jesus’ chest and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
“Would any one of you say 1 to your slave 2 who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’? 3
Then 1 he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. After he took the seven loaves and gave thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples to serve. So 2 they served the crowd.
But when you are invited, go and take the least important place, so that when your host 1 approaches he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up here to a better place.’ 2 Then you will be honored in the presence of all who share the meal with you.
So when Jesus 1 had washed their feet and put his outer clothing back on, he took his place at the table 2 again and said to them, “Do you understand 3 what I have done for you?
Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them. 1 (This was the disciple 2 who had leaned back against Jesus’ 3 chest at the meal and asked, 4 “Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?”) 5
