Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived. 1
so many of the Jewish people of the region 1 had come to Martha and Mary to console them 2 over the loss of their brother.) 3
So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary was sitting in the house. 1
Martha 1 said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
Martha said, 1 “I know that he will come back to life again 2 in the resurrection at the last day.”
Now as they went on their way, Jesus 1 entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. 2
(Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still in the place where Martha had come out to meet him.)
Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” 1 Martha, the sister of the deceased, 2 replied, “Lord, by this time the body will have a bad smell, 3 because he has been buried 4 four days.” 5
So they prepared a dinner for Jesus 1 there. Martha 2 was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table 3 with him.
But Martha was distracted 1 with all the preparations she had to make, 2 so 3 she came up to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care 4 that my sister has left me to do all the work 5 alone? Tell 6 her to help me.”
