no longer as a slave, ¹  but more than a slave, as a dear brother. He is especially so to me, and even more so to you now, both humanly speaking ²  and in the Lord.

So ¹  he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously.

“Now, according to your word, ¹  Sovereign Lord, ²  permit ³  your servant ⁴  to depart ⁵  in peace.

So ¹  when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave ²  well.

And the Lord’s slave ¹  must not engage in heated disputes ²  but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient,

So ¹  he sent another slave. They beat this one too, treated him outrageously, and sent him away empty-handed. ² 

And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

At harvest time he sent a slave ¹  to the tenants to collect from them ²  his portion of the crop. ³ 

One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, ¹  cutting off his ear.

When the centurion ¹  heard ²  about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders ³  to him, asking him to come ⁴  and heal his slave.

At ¹  the time for the banquet ²  he sent his slave ³  to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is now ready.’

So ¹  the master said to his ²  slave, ‘Go out to the highways ³  and country roads ⁴  and urge ⁵  people ⁶  to come in, so that my house will be filled. ⁷ 

“Would any one of you say ¹  to your slave ²  who comes in from the field after plowing or shepherding sheep, ‘Come at once and sit down for a meal’? ³

Then ¹  one of them ²  struck the high priest’s slave, ³  cutting off his right ear.

But ¹  one of those with Jesus grabbed ²  his sword, drew it out, and struck the high priest’s slave, ³  cutting off his ear.

Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest’s slave, ¹  cutting off his right ear. ²  (Now the slave’s name was Malchus.) ³
