We will swallow them alive ¹  like Sheol, ²  those full of vigor ³  like those going down to the Pit.

Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. ¹ 

“What ¹  profit is there in taking my life, ²  in my descending into the Pit? ³  Can the dust of the grave ⁴  praise you? Can it declare your loyalty? ⁵ 

No man can live on without experiencing death, or deliver his life from the power of Sheol. ¹  (Selah)

As when one plows and breaks up the soil, ¹  so our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.

But now ¹  don’t treat him as if he were innocent. You are a wise man and you know how to handle him; ²  make sure he has a bloody death.” ³

If I cry ¹  to corruption, ²  ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My Mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

“Surely one does not stretch out his hand against a broken man ¹  when he cries for help in his distress. ² 

The wicked are turned back and sent to Sheol; ¹  this is the destiny of ²  all the nations that ignore ³  God,
