For you say, “We have made a treaty with death, with Sheol 1 we have made an agreement. 2 When the overwhelming judgment sweeps by 3 it will not reach us. For we have made a lie our refuge, we have hidden ourselves in a deceitful word.” 4
Don’t listen to Hezekiah!’ For this is what the king of Assyria says, ‘Send me a token of your submission and surrender to me. 1 Then each of you may eat from his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own cistern,
No one thinks to himself, nor do they comprehend or understand and say to themselves: ‘I burned half of it in the fire – yes, I baked bread over the coals; I roasted meat and ate it. With the rest of it should I make a disgusting idol? Should I bow down to dry wood?’ 1
This is what the Lord says: “At the time I decide to show my favor, I will respond to you; in the day of deliverance I will help you; I will protect you 1 and make you a covenant mediator for people, 2 to rebuild 3 the land 4 and to reassign the desolate property.
So I will assign him a portion with the multitudes, 1 he will divide the spoils of victory with the powerful, 2 because he willingly submitted 3 to death and was numbered with the rebels, when he lifted up the sin of many and intervened 4 on behalf of the rebels.”
When you cry out for help, let your idols 1 help you! The wind blows them all away, 2 a breeze carries them away. 3 But the one who looks to me for help 4 will inherit the land and will have access to 5 my holy mountain.”
We are all like one who is unclean, all our so-called righteous acts are like a menstrual rag in your sight. 1 We all wither like a leaf; our sins carry us away like the wind.
You people of this generation, listen to what the Lord says. “Have I been like a wilderness to you, Israel? Have I been like a dark and dangerous land to you? 1 Why then do you 2 say, ‘We are free to wander. 3 We will not come to you any more?’
And you, Zion, city doomed to destruction, 1 you accomplish nothing 2 by wearing a beautiful dress, 3 decking yourself out in jewels of gold, and putting on eye shadow! 4 You are making yourself beautiful for nothing. Your lovers spurn you. They want to kill you. 5
Lord, I know you look for faithfulness. 1 But even when you punish these people, they feel no remorse. 2 Even when you nearly destroy them, they refuse to be corrected. They have become as hardheaded as a rock. 3 They refuse to change their ways. 4
Before this I had been like a docile lamb ready to be led to the slaughter. I did not know they were making plans to kill me. 1 I did not know they were saying, 2 “Let’s destroy the tree along with its fruit! 3 Let’s remove Jeremiah 4 from the world of the living so people will not even be reminded of him any more.” 5
Lord, you have always been fair whenever I have complained to you. 1 However, I would like to speak with you about the disposition of justice. 2 Why are wicked people successful? 3 Why do all dishonest people have such easy lives?
I 1 hear many whispering words of intrigue against me. Those who would cause me terror are everywhere! 2 They are saying, “Come on, let’s publicly denounce him!” 3 All my so-called friends 4 are just watching for something that would lead to my downfall. 5 They say, “Perhaps he can be enticed into slipping up, so we can prevail over 6 him and get our revenge on him.
that the Lord, the God of Israel, says, 1 ‘The forces at your disposal 2 are now outside the walls fighting against King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians 3 who have you under siege. I will gather those forces back inside the city. 4
O royal family descended from David. 1 The Lord says: ‘See to it that people each day 2 are judged fairly. 3 Deliver those who have been robbed from those 4 who oppress them. Otherwise, my wrath will blaze out against you. It will burn like a fire that cannot be put out because of the evil that you have done. 5
So I, the Lord, tell you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servants. 1 Do not be terrified, people of Israel. For I will rescue you and your descendants from a faraway land where you are captives. 2 The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace. They will be secure and no one will terrify them. 3
They said to him, “Please grant our request 1 and pray to the Lord your God for all those of us who are still left alive here. 2 For, as you yourself can see, there are only a few of us left out of the many there were before. 3
Shout the battle cry from all around the city. She will throw up her hands in surrender. 1 Her towers 2 will fall. Her walls will be torn down. Because I, the Lord, am wreaking revenge, 3 take out your vengeance on her! Do to her as she has done!
“Call for archers 1 to come against Babylon! Summon against her all who draw the bow! Set up camp all around the city! Do not allow anyone to escape! Pay her back for what she has done. Do to her what she has done to others. For she has proudly defied me, 2 the Holy One of Israel. 3
While they are watching, raise your baggage onto your shoulder and carry it out in the dark. 1 You must cover your face so that you cannot see the ground 2 because I have made you an object lesson 3 to the house of Israel.”
