His battle cry overwhelms like a flooding river 1 that reaches one’s neck. He shakes the nations in a sieve that isolates the chaff; 2 he puts a bit into the mouth of the nations and leads them to destruction. 3
“I have stomped grapes in the winepress all by myself; no one from the nations joined me. I stomped on them 1 in my anger; I trampled them down in my rage. Their juice splashed on my garments, and stained 2 all my clothes.
No longer will they build a house only to have another live in it, 1 or plant a vineyard only to have another eat its fruit, 2 for my people will live as long as trees, 3 and my chosen ones will enjoy to the fullest what they have produced. 4
I said, 1 “Oh, the feeling in the pit of my stomach! 2 I writhe in anguish. Oh, the pain in my heart! 3 My heart pounds within me. I cannot keep silent. For I hear the sound of the trumpet; 4 the sound of the battle cry pierces my soul! 5
The Lord says, 1 “These people are like soldiers who have readied their bows. Their tongues are always ready to shoot out lies. 2 They have become powerful in the land, but they have not done so by honest means. 3 Indeed, they do one evil thing after another 4 and do not pay attention to me. 5
I, the Lord, once called 1 you a thriving olive tree, one that produced beautiful fruit. But I will set you 2 on fire, fire that will blaze with a mighty roar. 3 Then all your branches will be good for nothing. 4
If I go out into the countryside, I see those who have been killed in battle. If I go into the city, I see those who are sick because of starvation. 1 For both prophet and priest go about their own business in the land without having any real understanding.’” 2
I said, 1 “Lord, you know how I suffer. 2 Take thought of me and care for me. Pay back for me those who have been persecuting me. Do not be so patient with them that you allow them to kill me. Be mindful of how I have put up with their insults for your sake.
But for now I, the Lord, say: 1 “I will send many enemies who will catch these people like fishermen. After that I will send others who will hunt them out like hunters from all the mountains, all the hills, and the crevices in the rocks. 2
“Please ask the Lord to come and help us, 1 because King Nebuchadnezzar 2 of Babylon is attacking us. Maybe the Lord will perform one of his miracles as in times past and make him stop attacking us and leave.” 3
How dare you claim the Lord’s authority to prophesy such things! How dare you claim his authority to prophesy that this temple will become like Shiloh and that this city will become an uninhabited ruin!” 1 Then all the people crowded around Jeremiah.

Then for your part take an iron frying pan 1 and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face toward it. It is to be under siege; you are to besiege it. This is a sign 2 for the house of Israel.
