In the evening she went, and in the morning she returned to a separate part 1 of the harem, to the authority of Shaashgaz the king’s eunuch who was overseeing the concubines. She would not go back to the king unless the king was pleased with her 2 and she was requested by name.
Say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Realize I am about to desecrate my sanctuary – the source of your confident pride, 1 the object in which your eyes delight, 2 and your life’s passion. 3 Your very own sons and daughters whom you have left behind will die 4 by the sword.

I answered, 1 “Who would listen if I spoke to them and warned them? 2 Their ears are so closed 3 that they cannot hear! Indeed, 4 what the Lord says is offensive to them. They do not like it at all. 5
You must 1 observe the Sabbath 2 rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. 3 You must look forward to the Sabbath 4 and treat the Lord’s holy day with respect. 5 You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals. 6
I predestine you to die by the sword, 1 all of you will kneel down at the slaughtering block, 2 because I called to you, and you did not respond, I spoke and you did not listen. You did evil before me; 3 you chose to do what displeases me.”
“I am about to send my messenger, 1 who will clear the way before me. Indeed, the Lord 2 you are seeking will suddenly come to his temple, and the messenger 3 of the covenant, whom you long for, is certainly coming,” says the Lord who rules over all.
The one who slaughters a bull also strikes down a man; 1 the one who sacrifices a lamb also breaks a dog’s neck; 2 the one who presents an offering includes pig’s blood with it; 3 the one who offers incense also praises an idol. 4 They have decided to behave this way; 5 they enjoy these disgusting practices. 6
