“A lion coming up from the thick undergrowth along the Jordan scatters the sheep in the pastureland around it. So too I will chase the Babylonians off of their land. Then I will appoint over it whomever I choose. For there is no one like me. There is no one who can call me to account. There is no ruler that can stand up against me.
He will cover you with the dust kicked up by his many horses. 1 Your walls will shake from the noise of the horsemen, wheels, and chariots when he enters your gates like those who invade through a city’s broken walls. 2
The first of all the first fruits and all contributions of any kind 1 will be for the priests; you will also give to the priest the first portion of your dough, so that a blessing may rest on your house.
I will not punish your daughters when they commit prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery. For the men consort with harlots, they sacrifice with temple prostitutes. It is true: 1 “A people that lacks understanding will come to ruin!”
(2:1) 1 Look! A herald is running 2 on the mountains! A messenger is proclaiming deliverance: 3 “Celebrate your sacred festivals, O Judah! Fulfill your sacred vows to praise God! 4 For never again 5 will the wicked 6 Assyrians 7 invade 8 you, they 9 have been completely destroyed.”
I listened and my stomach churned; 1 the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, 2 and I shook as I tried to walk. 3 I long 4 for the day of distress to come upon 5 the people who attack us.
When 1 the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, 2 and the fields yield no crops; 3 when the sheep disappear 4 from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls,
‘You expected a large harvest, but instead 1 there was little, and when you brought it home it disappeared right away. 2 Why?’ asks the Lord who rules over all. ‘Because my temple remains in ruins, thanks to each of you favoring his own house! 3
When they arrest you and hand you over for trial, do not worry about what to speak. But say whatever is given you at that time, 1 for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace, 1 with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants – not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham, 2 who is the father of us all
But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. 1 For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, 2 how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many!
For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, 1 so that you may not be conceited: A partial hardening has happened to Israel 2 until the full number 3 of the Gentiles has come in.
But 1 he said to me, “My grace is enough 2 for you, for my 3 power is made perfect 4 in weakness.” So then, I will boast most gladly 5 about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may reside in 6 me.
I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said, “Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. 1 Do not pay allegiance to other gods 2 and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.
