Listen attentively, 1 my God, and hear! Open your eyes and look on our desolated ruins 2 and the city called by your name. 3 For it is not because of our own righteous deeds that we are praying to you, 4 but because your compassion is abundant.
The ships of Kittim 1 will come against him, leaving him disheartened. 2 He will turn back and direct his indignation against the holy covenant. He will return and honor 3 those who forsake the holy covenant.
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, 1 along with the whole remnant of the people, 2 obeyed 3 the Lord their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the Lord their God had instructed him, 4 and the people began to respect the Lord. 5
But have my words and statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, not outlived your fathers? 1 Then they paid attention 2 and confessed, ‘The Lord who rules over all has indeed done what he said he would do to us, because of our sinful ways.’”
No one who has even a small portion of the Spirit in him does this. 1 What did our ancestor 2 do when seeking a child from God? Be attentive, then, to your own spirit, for one should not be disloyal to the wife he took in his youth. 3
When they came they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and do not court anyone’s favor, because you show no partiality 1 but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. 2 Is it right 3 to pay taxes 4 to Caesar 5 or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”
(as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”). 1 He is our father 2 in the presence of God whom he believed – the God who 3 makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do. 4
I have applied these things to myself and Apollos because of you, brothers and sisters, 1 so that through us you may learn “not to go beyond what is written,” so that none of you will be puffed up in favor of the one against the other.
Take care not to refuse the one who is speaking! For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less shall we, if we reject the one who warns from heaven?

So I am legally informing you: 1 Acquire it before those sitting here and before the leaders of my people! 2 If you want to exercise your right to redeem it, then do so. 3 But if not, then tell me 4 so I will know. 5 For you possess the first option to redeem it; I am next in line after you.” 6 He replied, “I will redeem it.”
When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king, “We have no portion in David – no share in the son of Jesse! 1 Return to your homes, O Israel! 2 Now, look after your own dynasty, O David!” 3 So all Israel returned to their homes. 4
