Its soldiers are armed with bows and spears. They are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride forth on their horses. Lined up in formation like men going into battle, they are coming against you, fair Babylon! 1
ג (Gimel) Judah 1 has departed into exile under 2 affliction and harsh oppression. 3 She 4 lives among the nations; she has found no resting place. All who pursued her overtook her in 5 narrow straits. 6
ט (Tet) Her menstrual flow 1 has soiled 2 her clothing; 3 she did not consider 4 the consequences of her sin. 5 Her demise 6 was astonishing, 7 and there was no one to comfort her. She cried, “Look, 8 O Lord, on my 9 affliction because my
פ (Pe) Zion spread out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her. The Lord has issued a decree against Jacob; his neighbors 1 have become his enemies. Jerusalem has become like filthy garbage 2 in their midst. 3
ת (Tav) As if it were a feast day, you call 1 enemies 2 to terrify me 3 on every side. 4 On the day of the Lord’s anger no one escaped or survived. My enemy has finished off those healthy infants whom I bore 5 and raised. 6
He will kill your daughters in the field with the sword. He will build a siege wall against you, erect a siege ramp against you, and raise a great shield against you.
The nations will know that the house of Israel went into exile due to their iniquity, 1 for they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies; all of them died by the sword.
Then the king of the north will advance and will build siege mounds and capture a well-fortified city. 1 The forces of the south will not prevail, not even his finest contingents. 2 They will have no strength to prevail.
This is what the Lord says: “Because the Ammonites have committed three crimes 1 – make that four! 2 – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. 3 They ripped open Gilead’s pregnant women 4 so they could expand their territory.
The vision 1 that Obadiah 2 saw. 3 The Lord God 4 says this concerning 5 Edom: 6
“If thieves came to rob you 1 during the night, 2 they would steal only as much as they wanted! 3 If grape pickers came to harvest your vineyards, 4 they would leave some behind for the poor! 5 But you will be totally destroyed! 6
They will rule 1 the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod 2 with a drawn sword. 3 Our king 4 will rescue us from the Assyrians should they attempt to invade our land and try to set foot in our territory.
