The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul and he prophesied within his house. Now David was playing the lyre ¹  that day. There was a spear in Saul’s hand,

David was going back and forth ¹  from Saul in order to care for his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.

When Samuel came to him, ¹  Saul said to him, “May the Lord bless you! I have done what the Lord said.”

Then Samuel got up early to meet Saul the next morning. But Samuel was informed, “Saul has gone to Carmel where ¹  he is setting up a monument for himself. Then Samuel left ²  and went down to Gilgal.” ³ 

When they came down from the high place to the town, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.

The Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and he became very angry.

But Saul said, “No one will be killed on this day. For today the Lord has given Israel a victory!”

So Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring near the ephod,” ¹  for he was at that time wearing the ephod. ² 

Then Saul built an altar for the Lord; it was the first time he had built an altar for the Lord.

Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to ¹  Shur, which is next to Egypt.

Now the Spirit of the Lord had turned away from Saul, and an evil spirit ¹  from the Lord tormented him.

So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is out with the sheep.

Saul and the Israelite army ¹  assembled and camped in the valley of Elah, where they arranged their battle lines to fight against ²  the Philistines.

When Saul and all the Israelites ¹  heard these words of the Philistine, they were upset and very afraid.

They are with Saul and the whole Israelite army ¹  in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.”

Saul retained David ¹  on that day and did not allow him to return to his father’s house.

The women who were playing the music sang, “Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his tens of thousands!”

When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.

So on that day David arose and fled from Saul. He went to King Achish of Gath.

Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub.” He replied, “Here I am, my lord.”
