For just as the ground produces its crops and a garden yields its produce, so the sovereign Lord will cause deliverance 1 to grow, and give his people reason to praise him in the sight of all the nations. 2
As a young man marries a young woman, so your sons 1 will marry you. As a bridegroom rejoices over a bride, so your God will rejoice over you.
Do not chase after other gods until your shoes wear out and your throats become dry. 1 But you say, ‘It is useless for you to try and stop me because I love those foreign gods 2 and want to pursue them!’
“Go and shout this message to my people in the countries in the north. 1 Tell them, ‘Come back to me, wayward Israel,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not continue to look on you with displeasure. 2 For I am merciful,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not be angry with you forever.
I will go to the leaders 1 and speak with them. Surely they know what the Lord demands. 2 Surely they know what their God requires of them.” 3 Yet all of them, too, have rejected his authority and refuse to submit to him. 4
Are they ashamed because they have done such shameful things? No, they are not at all ashamed. They do not even know how to blush! So they will die, just like others have died. 1 They will be brought to ruin when I punish them,” says the Lord.
I have listened to them very carefully, 1 but they do not speak honestly. None of them regrets the evil he has done. None of them says, “I have done wrong!” 2 All of them persist in their own wayward course 3 like a horse charging recklessly into battle.
Are they ashamed because they have done such disgusting things? No, they are not at all ashamed! They do not even know how to blush! So they will die just like others have died. 1 They will be brought to ruin when I punish them, says the Lord.
I will take away their harvests, 1 says the Lord. There will be no grapes on their vines. There will be no figs on their fig trees. Even the leaves on their trees will wither. The crops that I gave them will be taken away.’” 2
If people want to boast, they should boast about this: They should boast that they understand and know me. They should boast that they know and understand that I, the Lord, act out of faithfulness, fairness, and justice in the earth and that I desire people to do these things,” 1 says the Lord.
“I, the Lord, also have something to say concerning 1 the wicked nations who surround my land 2 and have attacked and plundered 3 the land that I gave to my people as a permanent possession. 4 I say: ‘I will uproot the people of those nations from their lands and I will free the people of Judah who have been taken there. 5
But they must make sure you learn to follow the religious practices of my people. 1 Once they taught my people to swear their oaths using the name of the god Baal. 2 But then, they must swear oaths using my name, saying, “As surely as the Lord lives, I swear.” 3 If they do these things, 4 then they will be included among the people I call my own. 5
I said, 1 “Lord, you know how I suffer. 2 Take thought of me and care for me. Pay back for me those who have been persecuting me. Do not be so patient with them that you allow them to kill me. Be mindful of how I have put up with their insults for your sake.
The houses in Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled by dead bodies 1 just like this place, Topheth. For they offered sacrifice to the stars 2 and poured out drink offerings to other gods on the roofs of those houses.’”
“The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 1 says, ‘I will soon bring on this city and all the towns surrounding it 2 all the disaster I threatened to do to it. I will do so because they have stubbornly refused 3 to pay any attention to what I have said!’”
