The Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built there, near the Jordan, an impressive altar. 1
Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders left the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead and reported back to the Israelites in the land of Canaan. 1
The Israelites were satisfied with their report and gave thanks to God. 1 They said nothing more about launching an attack to destroy the land in which the Reubenites and Gadites lived. 2
So the Gadites and the Reubenites replied to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands.
Then the Gadites and the Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has spoken. 1
They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its surrounding settlements, and in the pasturelands of Sharon to their very borders. 1
Moses assigned land to the tribe of Gad 1 by its clans.
Moses said to the Gadites and the Reubenites, “Must your brothers go to war while you 1 remain here?
The Israelites sent Phinehas, son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead to the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
When Phinehas the priest and the community leaders and clan leaders who accompanied him heard the defense of the Reubenites, Gadites, and the Manassehites, 1 they were satisfied. 2
The Reubenites and Gadites named the altar, “Surely it is a Reminder to us 1 that the Lord is God.”
The Lord made the Jordan a boundary between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no right to worship the Lord.’ 1 In this way your descendants might cause our descendants to stop obeying 2 the Lord.
On the sixth day Eliasaph son of Deuel, leader of the Gadites, presented an offering.
These were the families of the Gadites according to those numbered of them, 40,500. 1
the Gadites and the Reubenites came and addressed Moses, Eleazar the priest, and the leaders of the community. They said,
They crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, on the south side of the city, at 1 the wadi of Gad, near Jazer.
The Israelites received this report: 1 “Look, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar at the entrance to 2 the land of Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side.”
1 Now the Reubenites and the Gadites possessed a very large number of cattle. When they saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were ideal for cattle, 2
The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed for battle ahead of the Israelites, just as Moses had instructed them.
So the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites in Shiloh in the land of Canaan and headed home to their own land in Gilead, 1 which they acquired by the Lord’s command through Moses.
