The king responded, “Give the first woman the living child; don’t kill him. She is the mother.”

He said to his father, “My head! My head!” His father ¹  told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.”

He followed in the footsteps of Ahab’s dynasty, ¹  for his mother gave him evil advice. ² 

If I cry ¹  to corruption, ²  ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My Mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

I have leaned on you since birth; ¹  you pulled me ²  from my mother’s womb. I praise you continually. ³ 

May his ancestors’ ¹  sins be remembered by the Lord! May his mother’s sin not be forgotten! ² 

Certainly ¹  you made my mind and heart; ²  you wove me together ³  in my mother’s womb.

Listen, ¹  my child, ²  to the instruction ³  from ⁴  your father, and do not forsake the teaching ⁵  from ⁶  your mother.

My child, guard the commands of your father and do not forsake the instruction of your mother.

A foolish child is a grief ¹  to his father, and bitterness to the mother who bore him. ² 

The one who robs ¹  his father ²  and chases away his mother is a son ³  who brings shame and disgrace.

The one who curses ¹  his father and his mother, his lamp ²  will be extinguished in the blackest ³  darkness.

Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

A rod and reproof ¹  impart ²  wisdom, but a child who is unrestrained ³  brings shame ⁴  to his mother. ⁵ 

As a mother consoles a child, ¹  so I will console you, and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.”

Cursed be the day I was born! May that day not be blessed when my mother gave birth to me. ¹ 

and say: “‘What a lioness was your mother among the lions! She lay among young lions; ¹  she reared her cubs.

Then he got up, took the child and his mother during ¹  the night, and went to Egypt.

So ¹  he got up and took the child and his mother and returned to the land of Israel.

¹  Someone ²  told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside wanting ³  to speak to you.”
