So Barnabas and Saul, ¹  sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia, ²  and from there they sailed to Cyprus. ³ 

But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, ¹  and they began to contradict ²  what Paul was saying ³  by reviling him. ⁴ 

but Paul chose Silas and set out, commended ¹  to the grace of the Lord by the brothers and sisters. ² 

nor is he served by human hands, as if he needed anything, ¹  because he himself gives life and breath and everything to everyone. ² 

When he came to the steps, Paul ¹  had to be carried ²  by the soldiers because of the violence ³  of the mob,

A man named Ananias, ¹  a devout man according to the law, ²  well spoken of by all the Jews who live there, ³ 

“Regarding all the things I have been accused of by the Jews, King Agrippa, ¹  I consider myself fortunate that I am about to make my defense before you today,

And now I stand here on trial ¹  because of my hope in the promise made by God to our ancestors, ² 

But the centurion ¹  was more convinced ²  by the captain ³  and the ship’s owner than by what Paul said. ⁴ 

What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,

“Their throats are open graves, ¹  they deceive with their tongues, the poison of asps is under their lips.” ² 

But now ¹  apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) ²  has been disclosed –

For we know that the law is spiritual – but I am unspiritual, sold into slavery to sin. ¹ 

For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, ¹  that there are quarrels ²  among you.

And let us not put Christ ¹  to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by snakes. ² 

For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

and through your help to go on into Macedonia and then from Macedonia to come back ¹  to you and be helped on our way into Judea by you.

You yourselves are our letter, ¹  written on our hearts, known and read by everyone,

We did this ¹  as a precaution so that no one should blame us in regard to this generous gift we are administering.

Now ¹  I want you to know, brothers and sisters, ²  that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. ³
