Now ¹  this was ²  John’s ³  testimony ⁴  when the Jewish leaders ⁵  sent ⁶  priests and Levites from Jerusalem ⁷  to ask him, “Who are you?” ⁸ 

Many ¹  came to him and began to say, “John ²  performed ³  no miraculous sign, but everything John said about this man ⁴  was true!”

When ¹  John’s messengers had gone, Jesus ²  began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness ³  to see? A reed shaken by the wind? ⁴ 

Now when Jesus ¹  heard that John had been imprisoned, ²  he went into Galilee.

Now when John ¹  heard in prison about the deeds Christ ²  had done, he sent his disciples to ask a question: ³ 

Jesus answered them, ¹  “Go tell John what you hear and see: ² 

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ ¹ 

because John had repeatedly told ¹  him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” ² 

They answered, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, ¹  and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

In the wilderness ¹  John the baptizer ²  began preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. ³ 

Now ¹  in those days Jesus came from Nazareth ²  in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. ³ 

Now after John was imprisoned, ¹  Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel ²  of God. ³ 

Now ¹  as soon as they left the synagogue, ²  they entered Simon and Andrew’s house, with James and John.

He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James, ¹  and John, the brother of James.

For John had repeatedly told ¹  Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ² 

They said, ¹  “John the Baptist, others say Elijah, ²  and still others, one of the prophets.”

He took Peter, James, ¹  and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed.

He ¹  asked for a writing tablet ²  and wrote, ³  “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. ⁴ 

during the high priesthood ¹  of Annas and Caiaphas, the word ²  of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. ³ 

Herod added this to them all: He locked up John in prison.
