When evening came, Jesus and his disciples ¹  went out of the city.

As they were leaving Jericho, ¹  a large crowd followed them.

He said, “What comes out of a person defiles him.

All these evils come from within and defile a person.”

So ¹  the news ²  about him spread into all areas of the region. ³ 

Then people from Jerusalem, ¹  as well as all Judea and all the region around the Jordan, were going out to him,

But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.

For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder,

and will come out – the ones who have done what is good to the resurrection resulting in life, and the ones who have done what is evil to the resurrection resulting in condemnation. ¹ 

So he was staying with them, associating openly with them ¹  in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord.

Then Festus ¹  replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea, ²  and he himself intended to go there ³  shortly.

But he answered, ¹  “It is written, ‘Man ²  does not live ³  by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” ⁴ 

What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what ¹  comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.”

For it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and then goes out into the sewer.” ¹  (This means all foods are clean.) ² 

Now ¹  as Jesus ²  was starting out on his way, someone ran up to him, fell on his knees, and said, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” ³ 

Now ¹  as Jesus ²  was going out of the temple courts, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these tremendous stones and buildings!” ³ 

So John ¹  said to the crowds ²  that came out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers! ³  Who warned you to flee ⁴  from the coming wrath?

You must let no unwholesome word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for the building up of the one in need, ¹  that it may give grace to those who hear.

Then ¹  the angel ²  showed me the river of the water of life – water as clear as crystal – pouring out ³  from the throne of God and of the Lamb,

People ¹  from the whole Judean countryside and all of Jerusalem ²  were going out to him, and he was baptizing them ³  in the Jordan River as they confessed their sins.
