  A purple robe, a crown of thorn, A reed in His right hand; Before the soldiers’ spite and scorn I see my Savior stand. He bears between the Roman guard The weight of all our woe; A stumbling figure, bowed and scarred, I see my Savior go. • [Mar 15:34] From Calvary A Cry Was Heard

  From Calvary a cry was heard, A bitter and heart-rending cry; My Savior! every mournful word Bespeaks Thy soul’s deep agony. A horror of great darkness fell On Thee, Thou spotless, holy One! And all the swarming hosts of hell Conspired to tempt God’s only Son. The scourge, the thorns, the deep disgrace, These Thou couldst bear, nor once repine; But when Jehovah veiled His face, Unutterable pangs were Thine. Let the dumb world its silence break; Let pealing anthems rend the sky; Awake, my sluggish soul, awake! He died, that we might never die. Lord, on Thy cross I fix mine eye: If e’er I lose its strong control, O let that dying, piercing cry Melt and reclaim my wandering soul.

  Lord Jesus, God and Man, For love of man a Child, The very God, yet born on earth Of Mary undefiled. Lord Jesus, God and Man, In this our festal day To Thee for precious gifts of grace Thy ransomed people pray. We pray for childlike hearts, For gentle, holy love, For strength to do Thy will below As angels do above. We pray for simple faith, For hope that never fails, For true communion evermore With all Thy blessèd saints. On friends around us here O let Thy blessing fall; We pray for grace to love them well, But Thee beyond them all. O joy to live for Thee! O joy in Thee to die! O very joy of joys to see Thy face eternally! Lord Jesus, God and Man, We praise Thee and adore, Who art with God the Father One, And Spirit evermore.
