Luke 9:45

Context
9:45 But they did not understand this statement; its meaning 1  had been concealed 2  from them, so that they could not grasp it. Yet 3  they were afraid to ask him about this statement.

Luke 10:21-24

Context

10:21 On that same occasion 4  Jesus 5  rejoiced 6  in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise 7  you, Father, Lord 8  of heaven and earth, because 9  you have hidden these things from the wise 10  and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will. 11  10:22 All things have been given to me by my Father. 12  No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides 13  to reveal him.”

10:23 Then 14  Jesus 15  turned 16  to his 17  disciples and said privately, “Blessed 18  are the eyes that see what you see! 10:24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see 19  what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

Luke 18:34

Context
18:34 But 20  the twelve 21  understood none of these things. This 22  saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp 23  what Jesus meant. 24

1 tn Grk “it”; the referent (the meaning of the statement) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 sn The passive verb had been concealed probably indicates that some force was preventing them from responding. It is debated whether God or Satan is meant here. By 24:25 it is clear that their lack of response is their own responsibility. The only way to reverse this is to pay careful attention as v. 44a urges.

3 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “yet” to indicate that in spite of their lack of understanding, the disciples were afraid to ask about it. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

4 tn Grk “In that same hour” (L&N 67.1).

5 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

6 sn Jesus rejoiced. The account of the mission in 10:1-24 ends with several remarks about joy.

7 tn Or “thank.”

8 sn The title Lord is an important name for God, showing his sovereignty, but it is interesting that it comes next to a reference to the Father, a term indicative of God’s care. The two concepts are often related in the NT; see Eph 1:3-6.

9 tn Or “that.”

10 sn See 1 Cor 1:26-31.

11 tn Grk “for (to do) thus was well pleasing before you,” BDAG 325 s.v. ἔμπροσθεν 1.δ; speaking of something taking place “before” God is a reverential way of avoiding direct connection of the action to him.

12 sn This verse has been noted for its conceptual similarity to teaching in John’s Gospel (10:15; 17:2). The authority of the Son and the Father are totally intertwined.

13 tn Or “wishes”; or “intends”; or “plans” (cf. BDAG 182 s.v. βούλομαι 2.b). Here it is the Son who has sovereignty.

14 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

15 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

16 tn Grk “turning to the disciples, he said.” The participle στραφείς (strafei") has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

17 tn Grk “the”; in context the article is used as a possessive pronoun (ExSyn 215).

18 sn This beatitude highlights the great honor bestowed on the disciples to share in this salvation, as v. 20 also noted. See also Luke 2:30.

19 sn This is what past prophets and kings had wanted very much to see, yet the fulfillment had come to the disciples. This remark is like 1 Pet 1:10-12 or Heb 1:1-2.

20 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast.

21 tn Grk “they”; the referent (the twelve, v. 31) has been specified in the context for clarity.

22 tn Grk “And this.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated.

23 sn This failure of the Twelve to grasp what Jesus meant probably does not mean that they did not understand linguistically what Jesus said, but that they could not comprehend how this could happen to him, if he was really God’s agent. The saying being hidden probably refers to God’s sovereign timing.

24 tn Grk “the things having been said.” The active agent, Jesus, has been specified for clarity, and “said” has been translated as “meant” to indicate that comprehension of the significance is really in view here.
