John 20:9

Context
20:9 (For they did not yet understand 1  the scripture that Jesus 2  must rise from the dead.) 3

John 20:13

Context
20:13 They said 4  to her, “Woman, 5  why are you weeping?” Mary replied, 6  “They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have put him!”

John 20:15

Context

20:15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” Because she 7  thought he was the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him.”

1 tn Or “yet know.”

2 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

3 sn Verse 9 is a parenthetical note by the author. The author does not explicitly mention what OT scripture is involved (neither does Paul in 1 Cor 15:4, for that matter). The resurrection of the Messiah in general terms may have been seen in Isa 53:10-12 and Ps 16:10. Specific references may have been understood in Jonah 1:17 and Hos 6:2 because of the mention of “the third day.” Beyond this it is not possible to be more specific.

4 tn The conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has not been translated here.

5 sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208-9 s.v. γυνή 1), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions. This occurs again in v. 15.

6 tn Grk “She said to them.”

7 tn Grk “that one” (referring to Mary Magdalene).
