Matthew 5:6

5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

Matthew 5:8

5:8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Matthew 5:20

5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:48

5:48 So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

sn Those who hunger are people like the poor Jesus has already mentioned. The term has OT roots both in conjunction with the poor (Isa 32:6-7; 58:6-7, 9-10; Ezek 18:7, 16) or by itself (Ps 37:16-19; 107:9).

tn Or “that of the scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

sn See the note on Pharisees in 3:7.

sn This remark echoes the more common OT statements like Lev 19:2 or Deut 18:13: “you must be holy as I am holy.”
